"I know him on a personal level because he was my brother's roommate in college," Holliday said. "He played for my dad, and pitched with my brother, Josh."
Holliday responded with a two-out single led the Colorado Rockies over the Padres 3-2.
With the score 2-2, Todd Helton drew a one-out walk off Adkins (0-1) in the 11th, and moved to second on Garrett Atkins' flyout to left. Holliday singled to right for Colorado's sixth hit, and Helton beat Brian Giles' throw to the plate.
"It was a slider, I think it was down, and it got a good portion of the plate, and I got the best of Jon Adkins tonight," Holliday said. "We needed it, and it felt good to win that one."
Holliday's father and brother were both at Oklahoma State when Adkins played there from 1996-98. Tom Holliday was the manager, while Josh was a pitcher. Tom is now the pitching coach at Texas and Josh is hitting coach at Georgia Tech.
Matt Holliday was 0-for-4 in his previous game.
"Matt has had his ups and downs the last few games," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "He delivered the big hit for us so this couldn't have come at a better time for him."
David Cortes (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. Five relievers combined to allow one run and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
"Everybody that took the mound today was really good," Hurdle said.
Josh Barfield had three hits and scored two runs for the Padres.
Fogg retired his first 10 batters before Barfield tripled off
the glove of center fielder Choo Freeman in the fourth and Adrian
Gonzalez blooped a two-out single.
Holliday tied it with a sacrifice fly in the fourth after
