Clint Barmes drove in the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning single
to overcome Fuentes' rare lapse and help Colorado beat the Florida
Marlins 3-2 Friday night.
The Rockies improved to 8-3 on the road; only Detroit has a
better away record. Last year the Rockies' eighth road win came on
"There is a lot of confidence floating around in this
clubhouse," Barmes said. "We don't give up. We've been down late
in a few games, and we've come back. That's definitely a key in a
team that is going to compete, and that's what I feel we've got."
Colorado leads the NL West thanks to a 7-3 record in one-run
games. The Marlins, last in the NL East, fell to 1-6 in one-run
games despite their late comeback.
"The one-run losses are getting closer," Florida manager Joe
The Marlins rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the ninth against
Fuentes (1-0), scoring without a hit to end his franchise-record
streak of 21 consecutive converted saves.
Colorado quickly regained the lead in the 10th against Matt
"One good thing about our ballclub -- when we make mistakes, we
don't look in the rear-view mirror," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle
said. "We keep looking forward. We throw some dirt over it and
Pinch hitter Ryan Spilborghs walked to start the 10th. He
advanced on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Barmes, who had
been hitless in his previous four trips to the plate.
"The first four times I wasn't real happy with my at-bats,"
Barmes said. "I didn't feel comfortable. But I got a decent pitch
"Unfortunately I wasn't able to hold the lead," Fuentes said.
"But Scott did once we scored again, so that's awesome."
Jose Mesa became the 19th pitcher to appear in 900 games and
worked a hitless eighth for the Rockies. Mesa received a four-game
suspension earlier Friday for throwing at San Francisco's Omar
Vizquel but was able to pitch because he filed an appeal.
Rockies starter Jeff Francis remained winless this season even
though he allowed only one run in 5 1-3 innings. Florida's Brian
Moehler limited Colorado to two runs in six innings, reducing his
ERA from 13.14 to 9.82.
Hanley Ramirez started Florida's rally in the ninth with a
leadoff walk. He advanced on a wild pitch and took third on a
sacrifice, and after Miguel Cabrera was intentionally walked, Josh
Willingham tied the score with a sacrifice fly.
"One thing you haven't seen from us -- we're not quitting,"
Moehler said. "We're hanging in there and battling back."
But the Marlins struck out 14 times and left 11 men on base.
They had runners at first and third with none out in the seventh
and failed to score.
"Games like tonight are real frustrating, when you get great
pitching like we did and only scratch two runs across," Willingham
Hawpe homered with two out in the fourth to make it 2-0,
extending the Rockies' streak of hitting at least one home run in
all 11 road games. That's their longest such streak since they did
it in 13 consecutive games in 1997.
All but one of Hawpe's homers have come on the road.
Florida scored after Francis struck out the first two batters in
the fifth. Ramirez walked, stole second and came home on Dan
Uggla's double. The Marlins loaded the bases on two walks, one
intentional, before Jacobs flied out to end the inning.
Moehler started in place of RHP Sergio Mitre, who has been
nursing a sore right big toe. Mitre's next start was pushed back to
Sunday. ... With a runner at first in the sixth, Marlins CF Reggie
Abercrombie dropped a routine fly but avoided an error by throwing
to second for a forceout. ... Colorado improved to 20-39 in Miami.
