Bonds hit his 713th career home run, but the Phillies posted
their eighth straight win, 9-5, over the San Francisco Giants to
capture a sweep of the three-game series.
A seven-time National League MVP, Bonds moved within one homer
of tying Ruth (714) for second on the all-time home run list.
The 41-year-old lefthanded slugger, who heard from the hecklers
all night, drew an intentional walk in the first and singled to
right field in the fourth.
In the sixth inning, Bonds smacked a 2-1 pitch from Phillies
starter Jon Lieber (2-4) off the facing in the upper deck in
right field to pull the Giants within 5-3. Thousands stood in
amazement at the shot that was estimated at 450 feet.
In his final at-bat, Bonds appeared anxious while trying to hit
No. 714, as he was struck out by Aaron Fultz on a failed check
Lieber surrendered four runs and six hits in seven frames and
Pat Burrell and Aaron Rowand homered for Philadelphia, which has
posted its longest winning streak since a 13-game run from July
30-August 12, 1991.
After Bobby Abreu plated Jimmy Rollins on a single to center
field, Burrell followed with a two-run shot to center for a 3-0
lead in the first. Run-scoring hits by Rollins and Chase Utley
in the next inning drove in two more runs for a 5-1 lead.
Rowand hit his sixth homer of the year as part of a three-run
sixth that increased the lead to 8-3.
Matt Morris (2-3) was tagged for seven runs and eight hits in
five frames for San Francisco, which has dropped seven of its
last eight contests.
