MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Rondell White needed a game like this.
He ranked the performance at the top of his 14-year career.
"Probably, with the things I've been going through this year,"
White said, when asked if these were his biggest home runs. "I
have confidence and my swing is looser."
After homering in his first two at-bats and doubling in his
third, White got a standing ovation before his fourth at-bat and
tipped his helmet to the crowd.
"It felt great," White said. "They've been behind me all
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was glad to see White's home run
"We've seen him skip plenty of times against us and it's good
to see him skipping for us," Gardenhire said.
Since coming off the disabled list on July 15 with a strained
left shoulder, White has gone 8-for-14 with three home runs and six
RBI. Before that he had no home runs and 16 RBI.
Brad Radke won his fourth straight decision for Minnesota, which
has won 18 of 23 overall and 19 of the last 20 at home. Radke (8-7)
allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings, while striking out
four and walking none.
He was more focused on White's performance than his own.
"I'm just happy for Rondell," Radke said. "We've been kind of
waiting for a while and everybody felt bad for him, but he's stayed
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said he has always been an admirer
"He's a hard player and a good man," Maddon said. "He came
off the DL at the wrong time for us."
"I happened to notice on the board that the American League
pitchers with the lowest batting average against are Lackey,
Liriano and Santana and we have the wonderful pleasure of facing
all three on this road trip," Maddon said, referring to Los
Angeles's John Lackey, who beat the Devil Rays 4-0 last Friday,
Minnesota's Francisco Liriano, who beat Tampa Bay 8-1 on Tuesday,
and Johan Santana, the Twins' starter against Tampa Bay on
Thursday. "Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances to your
"As a whole, we just need to stay positive," said third
baseman Ty Wigginton, who had two hits in his first game since
injuring his back on Friday.
Norton hit his sixth homer off Radke in the second inning to
give Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead, but White hit his first of the game in
the bottom of the inning.
White led off the fifth with his third homer of the season, a
410-foot shot that made it 2-1.
Gomes homered in the sixth to snap an 0-for-19 slump.
White has eight multihomer games, the last coming on Aug.
