ESPN Fantasy Projection: Melancon's career was derailed by a rare condition known as compartment syndrome; swelling in his muscles, nerves and capillaries cut off blood flow to his forearm. When doctors went in for surgery, they found Melancon's pronator muscle was turning gray from a lack of oxygen. It took a while, but with the way Melancon pitched in 2019, it seems we can safely say he made a full recovery. At 34 years old, Melancon was a top-12 qualifying reliever by FIP. He ranked fourth in groundball rate with a 62.1% mark, and his strikeout rate was up six percentage points from 2018. He seized the closer job following a deadline trade to the Braves, and it was reported that he will remain the primary closer to begin 2020, even with Will Smith joining him in Atlanta. Many expect Smith to take the job eventually, though.
