Tomko supplies Giants with eight strong innings

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Brett Tomko got more moral support than run

support from his teammates earlier this season. That all changed in

the Giants' highest-scoring effort of the month.

Pedro Feliz and Moises Alou hit two homers apiece and Tomko

pitched eight innings of five-hit ball in San Francisco's fourth

straight victory, 10-2 over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday

night.

Feliz and Alou both homered in the first inning of the biggest

offensive night since April 27 for the Giants (23-22), who pulled

even with the Dodgers in the NL West standings.

Barry Bonds wasn't missed for one night, as San Francisco's

4-5-6 hitters -- Alou, Edgardo Alfonzo and Feliz -- combined for six

hits and seven RBI. Jason Ellison, Omar Vizquel and Deivi Cruz

also drove in runs.

Tomko (4-6) has earned a decision in each of his 10 starts this

season, but he had received just 2.3 runs of support per nine

innings, third-lowest in the NL. San Francisco scored just nine

total runs in his last five starts.

But the Giants gave him a fluffy cushion this time. Tomko, whose

teammates blamed themselves for his subpar record, finished his

quietly efficient outing by retiring 10 of his last 11 batters.

"Scoring some runs and burying some people is better than

anything," Tomko said. "We didn't have a lot of games where we

broke out this season. ... The guys are trying. They're not

purposely trying not to score runs. You've just got to ride it

out."

Feliz, who has missed just one game for the injury-plagued

Giants this season, had the fifth multihomer game of his career.

His shot off reliever Buddy Carlyle in the sixth inning landed deep

in the left field stands, inciting raucous chants of "Beat L.A.!"

J.D. Drew homered for the Dodgers, who have lost 10 of 13. Their

slumping lineup couldn't solve Tomko, who was still throwing 95-mph

fastballs in the eighth inning.

"When things have been going the way they've been going for us,

you just hope you don't get in a hole," manager Jim Tracy said.

"When they hit homers and there are people on base, the number on

that scoreboard gets to the point where it becomes fairly

insurmountable."

Wilson Alvarez (1-2) was battered in his first start of the

season for the Dodgers, allowing six runs and seven hits in the

first two innings of his three-inning stint.

Alvarez missed the first month of the season with shoulder

tendinitis, then spent the last three weeks in the bullpen. He was

on a 65-pitch limit, but needed 46 pitches just to get through the

first two innings -- and by the time he was through, his ERA rose

from 0.84 to 4.61.

"They were good pitches," Alvarez said. "I was looking at the

video. I threw the ball how I wanted, and they hit it. ... If I get

another chance, I'll try it again."

Alou hit his sixth homer of the season after a lengthy

first-inning battle with Alvarez. Alfonzo then doubled, and Feliz

ended a 1-for-15 slump with his seventh homer of the season.

Feliz's two-run homer highlighted San Francisco's three-run

sixth, and Alou added a solo shot in the seventh for his 27th

multihomer game.

"I'm still not there. I want to be able to hit the ball hard

two games in a row," said Alou, who has four homers in his last

five games. We hadn't scored 10 runs in a long time. It was nice to

be able to see that."

Jayson Werth went 0-for-2 while playing four innings in his

first game of the season for Los Angeles. Werth, who hit 16 homers

as a rookie last season, missed the Dodgers' exhibition schedule

and the first 44 regular-season games with a broken wrist.

Scott Erickson, recently dropped from the Dodgers' rotation

after going 1-4 with a 7.22 ERA, made his first relief appearance

since Aug. 23, 2002, in the seventh inning. Erickson has pitched

just six times as a reliever in 370 major league games.Game notes
Jeff Kent went 0-for-4. He's hitless in his last 20

at-bats. ... Giants 2B Ray Durham, who has a 13-game hitting

streak, was scratched with an ingrown toenail. He missed Sunday's

game against Oakland with a sprained finger. ... The Dodgers

activated Werth from the disabled list before the game, sending

rookie OF Jason Repko back to Triple-A Las Vegas.
