El Duque strikes out eight as D-Backs top Rockies

DENVER (AP) -- Orlando Hernandez was ready for his Arizona

Diamondbacks' debut, especially after a trip to Chicago to pick up

his World Series ring from the Chicago White Sox.

"It was very emotional ceremony in Chicago. I'm very happy, and

today's win made me happy twice," he said after striking out eight

in five innings to lead Arizona over the Colorado Rockies 4-2

Wednesday night.

Acquired from the World Series champions during the offseason,

Hernandez allowed two runs, six hits and two walks.

"I wouldn't want to want to face him as a right-handed

hitter," said Todd Helton, who had two doubles and an RBI off

Hernandez. "He comes at you at too many angles and at too many

speeds."

El Duque struck out Matt Holliday three times -- all ending

innings.

"I couldn't pick up his fastball," Holliday said. "I just had

trouble with him."

Greg Aquino, Terry Mulholland, Brandon Lyon, Luis Vizcaino and

Jose Valverde finished, with Valverde getting three outs for the

save.

Cory Sullivan walked with one out in the ninth before Clint

Barmes struck out as catcher Johnny Estrada picked off Sullivan at

first for a game-ending double play.

Luis Gonzalez drove in two runs with two doubles and a single,

and Chad Tracy and Shawn Green also had RBI for Arizona.

Loser Aaron Cook gave up three runs and six hits in seven

innings.

Tracy's run-scoring grounder and Gonzalez's bloop RBI single

built a 2-0 Arizona lead in the first.

Hernandez worked out of minor trouble in the first two innings,

then gave up an unearned run in the third when Barmes hit a two-out

single, took second when center fielder Jeff DaVanon bobbled the

ball and scored on Helton's double. Colorado's Luis A. Gonzalez

tied the score with an RBI single in the fourth.

Cook retired 13 in a row after Johnny Estrada's leadoff walk in

the second. Chad Tracy doubled with two outs in the sixth, and

scored on Gonzalez's double for a 3-2 lead. Shawn Green added an

RBI single in the eighth off Tom Martin.

"I made two pitches that I'd like back: a hanging curveball in

the first inning to Orlando Hudson and a high changeup to Luis

Gonzalez in the sixth," Cook said. "Both pitches that resulted in

critical runs."
