Guerrero hit a 428-foot shot to center in his second at-bat, his
first homer with the Angels after leaving Montreal to sign a $70
million, five-year contract in the offseason.
"I was looking for something around the strike zone. I just
swung," he said.
The All-Star slugger scored three times, finishing a triple
short of the cycle, and drew a two-out walk in the fourth before
Anderson's first homer.
It should be easier for Guerrero to excel in Anaheim's loaded
"Yeah. If you take a look in our lineup, from the bottom to the
top, we have some guys who can hit the ball," he said through a
translator, teammate Kelvim Escobar. "I just want to do my job, to
go out there and do my best."
He's fitting in, all right, just like Escobar, another new
addition in Anaheim. And Guerrero also said his mother, Maria
Altagracia, will be more comfortable living in California.
"Anaheim is going to be easier for her than it was in Montreal
because there are a lot more Spanish-speaking people. She doesn't
speak French," he said with a laugh.
Jarrod Washburn (1-0) struck out six in 5 1-3 innings, helping
him hold a big lead despite giving up six runs and 10 hits. He left
after his 101st pitch, with the Angels up 9-5.
The Angels led 8-0 in the fourth after Anderson drove a 1-0
pitch from Pineiro (0-1) over the wall in right-center. Anaheim has
scored 20 runs in its first two games.
"I definitely hope we can keep scoring runs," Anderson said.
"We have a lot of guys who don't stop swinging and don't stop
Boone hit a two-out solo homer in the fifth, trimming the margin
to 8-5, before Anderson hit his second homer in the sixth. He lined
a shot off reliever Kevin Jarvis just over the reach of leaping
right fielder Ichiro Suzuki.
The Mariners weren't finished, though.
Seattle scored twice in the sixth, getting to 9-7, and had the
potential tying run at second when Boone struck out on a disputed
check-swing to end the threat.
"You'd like to get some help right there," Mariners manager
Bob Melvin said. "He thought he saw it clearly."
The Angels added an unearned insurance run in the eighth when
Guerrero scored on Jose Guillen's grounder to third.
Guerrero was caught in a rundown, but reliever Rafael Soriano
dropped the ball on the tag at the plate.
Guerrero's homer made it 5-0 in the second, and it was 6-0 well
before sunset after Jose Molina hit an RBI double to left.
After getting 12 hits in their season-opening win Tuesday, the
new-look Angels continued to show their power. They had 16 hits
this time, and their three homers boosted their two-game total to
Pineiro pitched four innings, allowing a career-high eight runs
on nine hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
"I left a lot of pitches in the middle of the plate and never
got into a rhythm," Pineiro said.
