NEW JERSEY 5, OTTAWA 3

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Devils

started February much the same way they played most of January.

Zach Parise, Grant Marshall and Jamie Langenbrunner scored

first-period goals and Martin Brodeur made 27 saves to lead the

Devils to a 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

The Devils improved to 11-2-1 in 2006, including wins in each of

their seven home games. Brodeur, who was named NHL Defensive

Player of the Month earlier Wednesday, has started each of those

contests.

After getting shut out in consecutive contests for the first

time since 1983, the Devils needed just 100 seconds to end the

drought, as Parise re-directed a crossing pass from Sergei

Brylin past Dominik Hasek.

With New Jersey on a power play, Marshall directed Paul Martin's

point shot over Hasek's right shoulder for a 2-0 lead with 5:21

remaining in the first period. It was the seventh goal of the

season for both Parise and Marshall.

Just 44 seconds later the Devils got a gift from Ottawa

defenseman Christoph Schubert, who put an errant shot attempt by

Langenbrunner into his own net to make it 3-0. Schubert was in

the lineup because Brian Pothier was out with food poisoning.

The Senators, who were shut out by Boston in their previous

game, broke their scoreless string with 2:25 remaining in the

first on Antoine Vermette's 10th goal.

They got within 3-2 at 7:44 of the second when Dany Heatley beat

Brodeur from a sharp angle for his 32nd goal.

Brylin got back the goal on a power play with 23 seconds left in

the second and Erik Rasmussen broke a 31-game goalless drought

three minutes into the third for a 5-2 advantage.

Patrick Eaves netted his 11th of the season at 5:44 of the third

to complete the scoring for the Senators, who opened a

three-game road trip.
