10 Questions with DB Rashean Mathis

ESPN.com

MOBILE, Ala. -- In preparation for the 2003 Senior Bowl, ESPN.com sat down with Bethune-Cookman DB Rashean Mathis to get his take on everything from his favorite football moment to his musical tastes as he prepares for a professional football career.

1. What was your best college football moment on the field?

Rashean Mathis: It's probably the last game of our season when we beat Florida A&M and won the MEAC Conference. I had a pretty good game and picked off a pass.

2. What three CDs are getting the most play in your stereo?

Mathis: Tupac, R. Kelly and Fabolous.

3. What do you think will be the biggest difference between college and pro football?

Mathis: It has to be the competion level. The guys in the NFL are the best players in the world. You might have a couple of good players on a college team, but in the NFL everyone is great and the speed of the game is much quicker.

4. What's the best and worst part of gameday?

Mathis: The worst part is sitting around waiting for the game. The best part is getting yourself prepared and hyped right before you take off for the field.

5. Do you think there should be a Division I-A playoff?

Mathis: Since there are already so many bowl games, I think it would be a good idea to have a playoff. A team could end up 6-6 and in a bowl game. What's the purpose of that? I've talked to a lot of 1-A guys, and they wish there was a playoff.

6. If you could change one thing about college football, what would it be?

Mathis: I wish some of the 1-AA guys could experience the same things as the 1-A guys. The 1-A guys get a lot more help off the field with tutors and academic centers.

7. If you had to play on the other side of the ball, what position would you want to play?

Mathis: I'd like to the quarterback because I like to be in control.

8. If you couldn't play football, what sport would you pursue?

Mathis: Baseball is my favorite sport. I played pitcher and centerfield.

9. What player at the Senior Bowl are you looking forward to being on the field with?

Mathis: I'm impressed with all of them, but I'm looking forward to seeing what Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer will do.

10. What's your first big purchase after signing a pro contract?

Mathis: I'd love to get a house for my mom.
