From stange days to the return of the Soul's man

TOP PERFORMERS

A look at the best individual performances from Week 12:

• New York QB Aaron Garcia and WR Kevin Swayne: The duo combined for five TDs in another big win for the Dragons. Garcia finished with nine TD passes and 261 yards while Swayne had 10 catches for 130 yards.

• Kansas City QB Raymond Philyaw and WR Charles Frederick: Philyaw and Frederick combined for five TDs in the loss to New York. Philyaw ended up with eight TDs and threw for 411 yards while Frederick caught 11 passes for 140 yards.

• Philadelphia DB Eddie Moten: Moten picked off a pair of Andy Kelly passes and ran one back for a TD in the Soul's big win over New Orleans.

• Colorado WR Damian Harrell: Ho hum, another week, another record. Harrell caught a TD in a league-record 78th straight game. Harrell finished the night with 13 catches for 117 yards and four TDs.

• The Las Vegas Gladiators: Everyone deserves a little love here. From Nick Azar's game-winning FG as time expired to Nick Rolovich throwing seven TDs to Travis LeTendresse's nine catches for 117 yards and four TDs to Thabiti Davis' 12 catches for 114 yards and two TDs to the defense playing just well enough to win, the Gladiators snapped a nine-game losing streak.

• Nashville FB Dan Alexander: Alexander rushed 17 times for an AFL season-high 71 yards and two TDs. Alexander broke the league's single-season record for rushed in a season with 117. Funny part is Alexander nearly didn't make the game as his wife gave birth to the couple's first child -- a boy they named Baxton Alexander -- on Friday.

• Los Angeles WR LaShaun Ward: Filling in for the injured Kevin Ingram, Ward caught nine passes for 141 yards and four TDs as the Avengers snapped Georgia's five-game winning streak.

DID THAT REALLY JUST HAPPEN?

It was a week were double takes were in order.

Nashville beats Chicago 44-27? Los Angeles tops Georgia 57-51? Las Vegas beats Utah? New York beats KC?

What in the world is going on here?

"We're breathing," said Dragons head coach Weylan Harding, whose team sits one game back of the final playoff spot. "The way the league is playing out, we control our own destiny."

Well, let's not get carried away, but it's been a roller-coaster week.

Chicago sits WR Bobby Sippio and his injured ankle and watches its offense struggle to get just 27 points, including being shutout in the fourth quarter.

Georgia, despite coming off a bye week, gets outplayed by the inconsistent and shorthanded Avengers.

"We played a complete game tonight," Avengers head coach Ed Hodgkiss said of his team, which was without wide receiver Kevin Ingram and defensive back Damen Wheeler.

And Las Vegas? One week after announcing coach Danton Bartos would not return next year, the Gladiators stun Utah on a last-second field goal to snap a nine-game losing streak.

Suddenly, nothing seems certain anymore. Teams once written off (see New York and Tampa Bay) suddenly loom as this year's Chicago. Stay tuned. Anything can happen next week.

Monday Night Matchup

New York (4-7) at New Orleans (4-6)
Monday, May 28
(ESPN2, ESPN360, 8 p.m. ET)

Could the Dragons be this year's Rush? With the return of QB Aaron Garcia, New York is averaging 60 points per game and has won three of its last four. But the Dragons face a desperate New Orleans team that needs a win to keep its playoff hopes alive. The VooDoo will need a big game from QB Andy Kelly to keep up with the improved Dragons.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"I'm a little bit cocky or brash and I think the guys feed off that a little bit. I like being the guy in there and I'm happy that they want me in there. I was rusty. It doesn't matter who it is, though. You see the defense making plays and it brings it together again. We had that swagger."

-- Philadelphia QB Tony Graziani, to the Philadelphia Daily News after his return sparked the Soul to a 78-34 win over New Orleans. The Soul were 0-4 while he was out with a shoulder injury.

A statement game for the Avengers as they down one of the best teams in the league and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Even coach Jay Gruden admitted it wasn't pretty, but Shane Stafford's 7-yard TD pass to Jimmy Fryzel as time expired improved the Predators to 7-4.

Welcome back, Tony. Graziani's first game back from a shoulder injury was a good one. He threw four TDs and Philly snapped a six-game losing streak to notch the largest victory in franchise history.
