News: 16 hours agoTonges (knee) requires surgery for an MCL tear and is done for the season, Cam Inman reports.
Spin: The team placed Tonges on injured reserve earlier Wednesday, and now it's official that he will miss the rest of the season. Tonges suffered an MCL tear in the season opener against the Rams. Jack Stoll was signed to the practice squad to add depth, and Luke Farrell now projects to be the second tight end behind George Kittle.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Tonges enters his fourth NFL season with no standalone value, but as a potential fringe TE1 should George Kittle miss any time. Kittle missed seven full games last season, including the playoffs (Weeks 2-6, 17, 20). During those games, Tonges handled a 17.9% target share (6.6 per game) and posted a 34-328-3 receiving line. That works out to 11.8 fantasy PPG, which would've ranked eighth among all tight ends last season, ahead of the likes of Harold Fannin Jr., Travis Kelce, Tyler Warren and Jake Ferguson. Kittle (Achilles) is expected to be ready for Week 1, but if he's ruled out, Tonges will be a viable replacement.
