News: 3 days agoLance agreed Wednesday with the 49ers on a four-year, $34.11 million contract, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Spin: Now that he's put pen to paper on his rookie deal, Lance may be available later Wednesday, when the 49ers hold their first practice of training camp. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has said multiple times that he views Jimmy Garoppolo as his starting quarterback heading into 2021, but Lance's status as the No. 3 overall pick means he'll likely make starts at some point this season. Meanwhile, Jets quarterback and No. 2 overall selection Zach Wilson is left as the only first-round pick who hasn't signed a contract.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Lance was selected by the 49ers with the third overall pick of April's draft. The North Dakota State product has a solid frame at 6-foot-4, 224 pounds and his best assets are his huge arm and rushing ability. N.D. State didn't play in 2020 due to COVID, but Lance threw for 2,789 yards (9.7 YPA) and ran for 1,110 (6.5 YPC) in 16 games in 2019. Lance's shaky accuracy and a severe lack of experience (one full season as starter, 17.9 pass attempts per game) are concern areas, but his combination of size, arm talent and rushing ability supplies plenty of upside. Lance may not start early on, but it's only a matter of time until he overtakes Jimmy Garoppolo. With a good supporting cast and Kyle Shanahan running the show, Lance will have some fantasy appeal, so he's worth late-round consideration.
