News: 2 days agoSamuelsson is considered week-to-week due to his lower-body injury, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports Wednesday.
Spin: Given his timeline, Samuelsson seems unlikely to be ready to go for Opening Night against the Blue Jackets on Oct. 1. With the blueliner unavailable, Owen Power could see an uptick in power-play opportunities, while Ryan Johnson and Zach Metsa could be in the mix for a spot on the 23-man roster.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Primarily a depth option for Buffalo over his first five NHL campaigns, Samuelsson came out of nowhere to become one of the most valuable defenders in the league last season. He set career-best marks in goals (13), assists (28), points (41), shots on goal (109), average time on ice (22:50), hits (132) and blocked shots (154). Samuelsson's plus-41 rating was seventh-best in the entire league. That's the good news. The bad news is that most of it isn't sustainable. Samuelsson's 11.9 percent shooting percentage was considerably higher than any of his prior seasons and he still gets zero time with the man advantage. The 26-year-old is a very good player that will help the Sabres win hockey games in 2026-27, just don't overpay for past offensive production.
