News: 1 day agoHead coach Jared Bednar said that Wedgewood will draw the road start during Monday's preseason game against Winnipeg, Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette reports.
Spin: Previous reports indicated that Ilya Nabokov would defend the road crease Monday, but Bednar announced after Sunday's preseason win over the Mammoth that Wedgewood will begin the matchup in the crease, with Nabokov slated to enter about halfway through the game. Wedgewood made 45 regular-season appearances for the Avalanche last year and went 31-6-6 with a 2.02 GAA and .921 save percentage. He's likely to reprise a platoon role in net alongside Mackenzie Blackwood during the 2026-27 campaign.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Undrafted in most fantasy leagues prior to last season, Wedgewood went on to have the best year of his career by a country mile. He went 31-6-6 for the Avalanche in addition to leading the league in both GAA (2.02) and save percentage (.921). That said, it's fair to wonder if a repeat performance is in the cards. Wedgewood will be 34 years old prior to next season and has played for six different NHL teams. Colorado also has another capable goaltender in Mackenzie Blackwood. Wedgewood was so good a year ago that he likely deserves the benefit of the doubt, but classifying him as a no-doubt No. 1 fantasy goaltender for 2026-27 is probably a bit of a stretch.
