Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane notches two assists as Bayern Munich beat Mainz

Harry Kane played a part in both goals as Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 victory over Mainz.

Joshua Kimmich gave the visitors a deserved lead with his first goal of the campaign and Mainz thought they had equalised but Lee Jae-Sung's header was ruled out for offside.

Ballon d'Or winner Kane claimed his second assist of the afternoon as Lennart Karl doubled Bayern's lead, with Phillip Tietz' goal for the hosts coming too late.

Victory extended Bayern's unbeaten start to the season and secured them a fourth win from their last five in all competitions.

Bayern were on top in the opening stages and got a deserved opener in the 14th minute when Kane touched the ball to Kimmich and he rifled it in from the edge of the area.

Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner was called into action twice to stop Nathaniel Brown's effort from going in before getting behind Dayot Upamecano's header.

Kane was looking to break a mini scoring duck after going a couple of games without finding the net, but he skied over from 20 yards with his first sight of goal.

Mainz thought they were level four minutes before the break when Lee headed in at the far post but the goal was chalked off for offside following a lengthy VAR check.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer took a knock and stayed down after the disallowed goal and was forced off with an injury on his 550th Bayern appearance to be replaced by Jonas Urbig.

Bayern were edging closer to a second and got their reward in the 57th minute when Kane saw a shot blocked but the ball fell back to him and he teed up Karl to score.

Zentner was needed again to deny Kimmich a second goal of the game from a tight angle.

Kane was still looking to get on the scoresheet and collected the ball on the halfway line before trying to catch Zentner off-guard from the halfway line but his audacious effort went harmlessly wide.

Bayern were hungry for more and Alphonso Davies saw an effort cleared off the line before Upamecano hit the crossbar.

Mainz pulled a goal back at the death when Tietz flicked a header beyond Urbig but they could not stop Bayern from extending their unbeaten away run in the Bundesliga to 31 games.
