Chelsea get WSL season back on track by thrashing Man United
Chelsea thrashed Manchester United 5-0 to bounce back from their opening day frustration and kick-start their WSL campaign.
Sjoeke Nüsken, Keira Walsh, Lauren James, Ellie Carpenter and Lucy Bronze were all on target in a convincing display from Chelsea, a week after they failed to make their dominance pay in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.
United, in a period of transition under new manager Eva Olid, looked overwhelmed as they managed only one shot on target in a second consecutive defeat to start the season.
Chelsea's first goal came with the help of an error from Dominique Janssen, who misjudged a bouncing ball to allow Wieke Kaptein to nip in and pull it back for Nusken to side-foot home with ease.
Walsh doubled the advantage when United failed to clear a cross into the box, with Bronze pouncing on the loose ball and laying it off for Walsh to fire home from the edge of the box.
James went close to adding a third on the stroke of half-time, with her bending shot parried and Carpenter denied on the follow-up, but their dominance continued into the second half.
James killed it off as a contest just after the hour, racing onto a through-ball from Walsh and slotting it into the bottom corner.
And four minutes later Carpenter added a fourth with Janssen again at fault. She lost possession on the edge of her own box after a loose pass, and Kaptein laid the ball off for the onrushing Carpenter.
Her first shot was blocked but the ball came back for the Australian to lift it into the far corner of the net.
Phallon Tullis-Joyce made fine saves to deny Chelsea substitutes Kadeisha Buchanan and Maika Hamano but Chelsea had the final word when Bronze lashed home from close range after a corner.
