Wolfsburg picked up their first win in the Bundesliga since August to move out of the bottom three.
Mario Gomez wasted a glorious chance to give the Wolves the lead after a quarter of an hour against Freiburg when he had only Alexander Schwolow to beat, but the goalkeeper stuck out a leg to make a save.
Gomez got his goal before half-time, though, heading in Ricardo Rodriguez's cross, with Schwolow this time unable to keep his effort out with his fingertips.
The Germany international added his second in the 53rd minute, providing a cool finish in a one-on-one situation.
Rodriguez made sure of the points with a penalty in the 86th minute, helping Wolfsburg pick up their first win since the opening day of the campaign.
