Arkansas routs Duke to clinch first Women's College World Series berth
Arkansas is heading to the Women's College World Series for the first time in program history after a 10-2 victory over Duke in the NCAA super regionals on Saturday at Bogle Park in Fayetteville. The game was called after five innings due to the run rule.
Karlie Davison secured the historic win with a three-run home run in a six-run fifth inning, finishing 1-for-1 with three RBIs. The Razorbacks' offense was potent from the start, with Tianna Bell launching a two-run homer in the first inning to give Arkansas an early lead. Bell finished with two RBIs.
Ella McDowell contributed a two-run single for Arkansas (47-11) while going 2-for-3, Atalyia Rijo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Dakota Kennedy added a pair of hits and an RBI. Kennedy Miller also had a multihit game, going 2-for-2.
In the circle, Arkansas starter Payton Burnham was effective, pitching a complete game. She allowed two earned runs on three hits over five innings, striking out six and walking two.
For Duke (43-17), the offense came from a two-run home run by Tyrina Jones in the bottom of the fourth inning that briefly cut its deficit to 4-2. Jessica Oakland and Jada Baker were the only other Blue Devils to record a hit.
Arkansas took control early with Bell's homer in the top of the first. The Razorbacks extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth on a two-run double from Rijo. After Jones' homer made it 4-2, Arkansas responded emphatically in the top of the fifth. McDowell's two-run single pushed the lead to 6-2, followed by an RBI groundout from Kennedy. Davison then delivered the final blow with her three-run shot, capping the six-run frame and securing the trip to Oklahoma City.
