BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) _ Chris Stynes, Carl Everett and Mike Lansing hit solo homers off Pittsburgh starter Bronson Arroyo and the Boston Red Sox beat the Pirates 8-6 Friday. Morgan Burkhart added a two-run homer off reliever Josias Manzanillo as the Red Sox had four homers among their 13 hits _ the fifth successive game the Pirates' injury-depleted staff has allowed 10 or more hits. A strong wind blowing out to dead center at McKechnie Field _ spring training's equivalent to Wrigley Field _ certainly helped the Red Sox, who have a number of hitters batting in the low .200s. "We hit some balls good, real good," manager Jimy Williams said. "I don't think the wind had anything to do with Everett's home run." Lansing came into the game hitting .120 and Everett was at .233. Dante Bichette went 0-for-3 and is at .200. "We have a veteran club, and guys aren't panicking yet about not getting hits," said Everett, who hit a long shot onto the roof of the Boys and Girls Club in left field in the third. "We still haven't played our full squad yet." The Pirates may not have their full pitching staff for some time, with starters Francisco Cordova and Jason Schmidt currently injured. Arroyo, competing to join the rotation, impressed manager Lloyd McClendon despite yielding the three homers among five hits in five innings. "In the two years I've seen the kid pitch, I thought it was his best performance to date," McClendon said. "He kept the ball down in the zone, and I thought the only (home run) ball that was legitimate was Everett's. I was thoroughly impressed." Burkhart hit his third homer this spring in the seventh to make it 5-2. The Red Sox took a 7-2 lead an inning later on RBI singles by Craig Grebeck and Shea Hillenbrand off Steve Sparks. Hillenbrand, a catcher who can also play first, third, and the outfield, is resigned to starting the season in Triple-A but is hitting .688 (11-for-16). The Pirates rallied for two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings off relievers Derek Lowe and Kent Mercker before minor league pitcher Rod Henderson got the final two outs. Pinch-hitter Enrique Wilson hit a solo shot in the ninth off Mercker. Notes: Pirates C Jason Kendall was hit twice by pitches, by Red Sox starter Tomo Okha and reliever Rolando Arrojo. ... The crowd of 6,075 was a sellout. ... The Pirates play a two-game weekend series against Tampa Bay in Mexico City. ... Okha made his first start of the spring, giving up two runs and four hits in four innings. ... Henderson spent part of last season with Long Island of the Independent League. ... Pedro Martinez starts Saturday for the Red Sox against Cincinnati.
