TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ Reggie Sanders showed up _ with a tire as evidence and a bat that did some serious damage. Sanders, who failed to make it to a game in Phoenix on Wednesday because his Mercedes had a flat tire and the spare didn't fit, hit a pair of three-run home runs Friday as the Arizona Diamondbacks pounded the Chicago White Sox 18-4. Sanders' second homer, off reliever Sean Lowe, cleared the batter's eye far above the 405-foot sign in center field. Sanders had the offending spare tire in front of his locker. ``He had to defend himself,'' teammate Matt Williams said. ``We were all over him.'' Sanders, who signed as a free agent, has loved his experience with the Diamondbacks, with the exception of the flat tire. ``It's been awesome joining a team that has already been put together and just has added a couple of players,'' Sanders said. ``It's a great things. I tell you, these guys welcomed us openly and they're dedicated to winning. That's the best thing.'' Manager Bob Brenly said there would be no punishment for Sanders missing a game. ``Putting one over the green monster gets him off the hook,'' Brenly said. Williams, a notoriously slow starter in the spring, was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and an RBI double. After starting the spring 2-for-16, Williams _ trying to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2000 season _ has homered twice in three games and is 7-for-15 over the past week. Williams, David Delluci and Sanders homered off Chicago starter Jon Garland in Arizona's nine-run first inning. It was not the kind of day Garland needed in his battle with Kip Wells for the fifth spot in the Chicago's starting rotation. ``They came out swinging and I didn't hit my spots,'' Garland said. ``Fastball, curveball, it didn't matter. They were hitting everything.'' Garland, who hadn't allowed a run in his previous seven innings, gave up 11 runs _ 10 earned _ and 10 hits in three innings. Dellucci, in a crowded, uphill fight to make the team as a backup outfielder, also had a diving catch in left-center in the seventh inning. Tony Womack was 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the Diamondbacks' 20-hit game. Brian Anderson, in his third start _ and best _ of the spring, allowed one earned run in five innings, a homer by Carlos Lee in the fourth. It was Lee's third home run of the spring. Frank Thomas was 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a walk. He is 3-for-23 (.130) this spring.
