News: 5 days agoMikolas threw his first live batting practice session of summer camp Tuesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Spin: The right-hander further corroborated he's over the forearm flexor strain that had sidelined him in the spring, throwing two innings to the majority of the Cardinals lineup and getting it done under the 40-pitch threshold. Mikolas' next action is set to come during an intrasquad game later in the week, a stint that's scheduled to consist of three innings and 50 pitches in duration.

ESPN Fantasy Projection: Mikolas' follow-up to his successful return from playing overseas was a mixed bag. He continued to be stingy with the walks and kept hitters off balance, but like many, struggled to keep the new baseball in the yard and was a bit more hittable, resulting in an ERA that was out of balance with a solid WHIP. He does not have great stuff, but the combination of his pitches and how he executed them drove his 2018 success. Last season, the slider -- a pitch he throws 25% of the time -- failed him miserably. Batters hit .184 off Mikolas' slider in 2018, swinging and missing 14% of the time. Last season batters hit .287 off the same pitch while swinging and missing only 11% of the time. He needs that pitch to find a happy medium in 2020.
