- Why the Jets released Bell now vs. waiting for a trade
|Last 5 Games|
News: 2 days agoBell ran the ball seven times for 25 yards and a touchdown and caught his lone target for 11 yards in Sunday's 35-31 win over the Raiders.
Spin: It took a midseason trade and six games, but Bell finally hit pay dirt for the first time in 2020. Sunday's contest gave us the clearest view of a competitive game script from start to finish since the former All-Pro joined Kansas City's backfield in Week 7, but it still resulted in single-digit touches while starter Clyde Edwards-Helaire nearly doubled that workload (14 carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns and one reception for eight yards). Bell could end up seeing more opportunities as the season progresses if CEH is forced to miss time for any reason, but as of right now, it appears that Bell will remain in a change-of-pace role heading into a road meeting with Tampa Bay on Sunday.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Despite a healthy dose of turmoil during the 2019 season, Bell is back as the Jets' feature back. Bell's first season in New York saw him rank no lower than 11th among backs in carries, targets, receptions and receiving yards. However, Bell ended up just 16th among backs in fantasy points, due to a low touchdown total (four) and horrific efficiency (3.2 YPC, 5.9 YPT). Bell's heavy volume allowed him a high floor (double-digit points all but one week), but he no longer has an elite ceiling (one weekly finish better than ninth). Bell is now 28 years old and hasn't appeared in 16 regular-season games since 2014. He's no longer an RB1, though an improved Jets offensive line helps his 2020 prospects.
