Sporting v Sevilla
High-flying Sevilla held by lowly Sporting Gijon in LaLiga
Sevilla missed the chance to record their best start to a league season after being held 1-1 by Sporting Gijon on another frustrating trip to El Molinon for the Andalusian side.A victory would have left high-flying Sevilla with 23 points from their opening 10 games - more points than they had ever previously managed at this stage of a campaign - and that looked on the cards when Luciano Vietto fired them ahead inside four minutes. However, Moi Gomez levelled things up midway through the first half with a fine volley and Sevilla could not find a second goal which would have earned them a sixth successive win in all competitions. The result continues Sevilla's disappointing run at El Molinon, which had seen them lose six of their last eight meetings with just one win - back in 2009.For a while it seemed like that dismal record was about to get better when the Europa League champions took an early lead through Vietto. The on-loan Atletico Madrid striker latched onto a clearance by his own goalkeeper that was flicked on by Wissam Ben Yedder and raced clear before nicking the ball past Ivan Cuellar.Sevilla's lead lasted just 14 minutes, though, with Gomez pulling the hosts level with a unstoppable shot from Roberto Canella's cross.Jorge Sampaoli's visitors pushed for a winner after that but, despite creating a number of chances including an effort from Franco Vazquez that hit the post, could find no way through.Sporting have now claimed back-to-back draws since suffering five straight defeats, although they remain in the bottom five, while Sevilla missed the chance to replace Real Madrid in top spot for at least a few hours.
