Valencia v Atlético
Youngsters deliver for fully changed Atlético Madrid at Valencia
Youngsters Iker Luque and Miguel Cubo struck late as a completely-changed Atlético Madrid won 2-0 at Valencia.
Atlético coach Diego Simeone made 11 changes for the visit to the Mestalla as he prioritised Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg at Arsenal.
The Argentinian's decisions were vindicated against a Valencia side that still have work to do to ensure their top-flight survival.
Luque and Cubo made the difference as they scored in the last 16 minutes after being handed debuts off the bench.
Atlético tightened their grip on fourth place aas a result, leaving Valencia just five points above 18th-placed Sevilla, who have a game in hand.
Whilst it was clear this fixture was not Simeone's main focus in his 1,000th match as a coach, his side were still dominant.
Rodrigo Mendoza was denied by Stole Dimitrievski and Nahuel Molina struck the woodwork from distance in the first half. Robin Le Normand and Rayane Belaid also went close.
Largie Ramazani also hit a post for the hosts but 20-year-old Luque broke the deadlock when he found the bottom corner from the edge of the box in the 74th minute.
Valencia stepped up the pressure but could not force an equaliser and were condemned to defeat by Cubo eight minutes from time.
Antoine Griezmann, also sent on in the closing stages, latched onto a long ball from deep inside his own half and, despite a stumble, slipped the 18-year-old in on goal.
Cubo finished emphatically with a low shot from close range.
