News: 1 day agoMariota completed 15 of 25 passes for 174 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 19-13 loss to the Commanders. He added six rushes for 49 yards.

Spin: From a fantasy perspective, Mariota performed as expected thanks to work with his legs, as he's now topped 40 rushing yards in five of his last eight games. He also tossed a four-yard touchdown pass on a misdirection play midway through the second quarter. However, Mariota's performance left plenty to be desired, as he averaged only 7.0 yards per attempt and also threw an interception at the Commnanders' goal line with just over a minute remaining in the contest. Despite the uninspiring performance, Mariota is likely to remain Atlanta's starting quarterback so long as the team remains in playoff contention.

ESPN Fantasy Projection: Mariota is competing with third-round rookie Desmond Ridder to replace Matt Ryan as the Falcons' starting QB. Mariota has barely seen the field since losing the starting gig in Tennessee in 2019. He's played extended snaps in one game over the last two seasons and showed well in that 2020 Week 15 outing (226 passing yards, 88 rushing yards and a pair of TDs). Of course, prior to that, the 2015 second-overall pick struggled during five seasons in Tennessee. Mariota has been effective with his legs throughout his career (264-1,574-13 rushing line), but that has yet to translate to a top-12 fantasy campaign (he's finished better than 18th once). We shouldn't expect that to change in Atlanta's rebuilding offense. He's not a good QB2 option.
