Sting didn't score for 8½ minutes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Indiana Fever made quick work of the

Charlotte Sting.

Eight days after a 22-point loss in Charlotte, the Fever opened

a 15-point lead in the first five minutes and easily held off the

Sting 70-57 on Saturday night.

"We wanted to jump on them the way they did to us on their home

court," said Tamika Catchings, who led the Fever with 19 points.

Indiana used free throws to overcome eight minutes without a

field goal, scoring 11 of its final 13 points from the line.

After a 3-pointer by Kristen Rasmussen gave the Fever a 57-43

lead with 9:01 to play, Indiana didn't hit another field goal until

Deanna Jackson's layup with 32 seconds left made it 68-57.

Allison Feaster led Charlotte (2-4) with a season-high 18 points

and Andrea Stinson scored 13.

Natalie Williams scored 14, Kelly Miller had 12 and reserve

Kelly Schumacher added 10 for the Fever (3-2).

"The good thing about our team is we got a lot of scorers. It's

not like I have to go out and score every time we get the ball,"

Catchings said. "The beauty of this team is I can drive and kick

it outside to guys that can score."

Charlotte hurt itself with 16 turnovers, doubling Indiana's

total. Indiana scored 23 points following Sting turnovers, while

Charlotte had only eight following Indiana's eight turnovers.

"You can't give the ball away to a team who is motivated after

being beaten by 20 at our place. It would have been a different

ballgame had we not given the ball away," Feaster said.

"We knew Indiana would come at us after we beat them at home,"

Charlotte coach Trudi Lacey said. "We turned the ball over early

and struggled all the way."

The Fever made 11 of their first 14 shots, to open a 23-8 lead

on a 17-point run that began on Ebony Hoffman's first basket of the

season. Charlotte had four consecutive turnovers without getting

off a shot during the run, which ended on a short jumper by Dawn

Staley with 13:30 left in the half.

Indiana took its biggest lead of the game 38-21 with 4:49 to go,

but Charlotte got back in the game to trail 40-34 at the break.

The Sting made 14 of 21 shots in the half, but were hurt by 10

turnovers in the half, which led to 16 points for Indiana.

Charlotte pulled within five points when Tammy Sutton-Brown hit

two free throws early in the second half. Indiana responded with

eight consecutive points to take a 53-40 lead.
