Charlotte Sting @ San Antonio Silver Stars
Ferdinand, Feenstra score 16 each for San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- San Antonio got its first victory of the
season Thursday night as reserve rookie center Katie Feenstra
scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half, leading the Silver
Stars to a 69-62 victory over Charlotte.
The Silver Stars opened with five straight losses, a franchise
record to begin the season. They were the league's only winless
team.
Charlotte, which led by seven at halftime, dropped to an Eastern
Conference-worst 1-4. The Sting were led by Tammy Sutton-Brown's 15
points.
"We got more player movement in the second half," San Antonio
coach Dan Hughes said. "That allowed us to get the ball inside (to
Feenstra).
"We have a good group that's been in a lot of games, they've
just not been a confident or assertive group."
The Silver Stars opened the second half with a 20-6 run after
Marie Ferdinand, who joined Feenstra with 16 points, scored on a
layup. But the Sting tied the score 45-45 when Sheri Sam hit a
3-pointer with 8:54 remaining.
It remained close much of the rest of the way before San Antonio
broke through. The Silver Stars entered the game leading the league
in free throw shooting with an .844 percentage and they made 19 of
23 attempts Thursday.
"We didn't stick to the things that got us advantages in the
first half," Sutton-Brown said. "We didn't get back (on defense)
and we lost focus."
San Antonio led 19-17 with 6:21 remaining in the first half. But
the Silver Stars scored only four points the rest of the half and
went scoreless over the final 2:37 to fall behind 30-23.
Charlotte center Sutton-Brown recorded her 200th career blocked
shot early in the second half and is 10th player in league history
to reach the milestone.
The Sting entered the game leading the league 3-point shooting
with a .444 percentage and went 4- of-10 Thursday.
