Sparks' Leslie scores 41 to reach 5,000-point milestone

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lisa Leslie became the first WNBA player to

surpass 5,000 career points when she scored a career-high 41 to

lead the Los Angeles Sparks to a 105-80 rout of the San Antonio

Silver Stars on Sunday night.

Leslie went 16-of-23 from the field and added 13 rebounds and

three assists as the Sparks (11-3) set a team scoring record in

their eighth consecutive victory. Chamique Holdsclaw added 15

points.

"She was vintage Lisa Leslie in every way," Silver Stars coach

Dan Hughes said. "She is having a good year, the best I've ever

seen her play."

Leslie, who now has 5,040 career points, broke the 5,000-point

barrier with a 19-foot jumper from the right of the lane 53 seconds

into the game.

"I didn't think about the 5,000 thing at all," Leslie said.

"You can go out there and not score one basket."

Leslie received the ball from Sparks owner Johnny Buss during a

timeout and gave it to her husband, Michael Lockwood, seated along

the sideline. She then hugged Lockwood and her mother, Christine

Espinoza.

"I don't know what it means," Leslie said of her career

achievement. "I don't know what to feel. I don't feel great

because there's no one ahead of me to say, 'That's a good mile

marker.' But I'm happy if everyone's happy."

Sparks coach Joe Bryant said he was surprised that Leslie's

previous single-game scoring best was 32 points.

"It's kind of hard for me to believe, as good as she is,"

Bryant said. "It looked like she should have 50.

"She might get that 81 one day," Bryant added, referring to

the total his son, Kobe Bryant, had in a game last season. "If

she's not the greatest player to ever play, I don't know who is."

Agnieszka Bibrzycka scored a career-high 21 points for the

Silver Stars (6-7), who have lost three in a row and five of seven.

Shanna Zolman added a career-best 17 points.

The Sparks took control by ending the first half with an 8-0 run

that broke a 41-all tie and gave them a 49-41 halftime lead. Los

Angeles led by as many as 29 points.
