Houston Comets @ San Antonio Silver Stars
Silver Stars snap three-game skid, squeak past Comets
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The San Antonio Silver Stars have the
playoffs on their minds after sweeping the season series from
perennial powerhouse Houston.
Chantelle Anderson scored 17 points and went 9-for-9 from the
free-throw line, leading the Silver Stars to a 67-64 victory over
the Comets on Tuesday night.
The Silver Stars (11-11) won despite going through a 12 minute,
30 second stretch -- that spanned the first three quarters -- without
making a field goal.
San Antonio broke a three-game losing streak and improved its
playoff chances by moving into a fourth-place tie in the Western
Conference with Seattle. The Storm (11-11) lost to Sacramento 74-61
on Tuesday.
"We look at the standings, but we have to do our thing,"
Anderson said. "Everyone wants to set goals whether as a team or
personally. (Making the playoffs) is a tangible goal that we can
look at and see."
Houston, which led by nine points late in the third quarter,
lost on the road for the seventh time in eight games. Houston is
0-3 this year against San Antonio.
The Comets (13-11) had a chance to tie or go ahead on a
3-pointer, but Shannon Johnson stole the ball from Tamecka Dixon
with 15 seconds left.
"There are tough losses and there are tough losses, and this is
one of the tough losses," Comets coach Van Chancellor said. "I'm
at a loss. We had the opportunities. It just didn't happen."
Houston outshot San Antonio from the floor 42 percent to 36
percent. The Comets outrebounded San Antonio 48-40.
But the Comets were 7-of-15 from the free-throw line -- the
Silver Stars went 23-of-29 -- and committed 22 turnovers that led to
25 points for San Antonio.
Agnieszka Bibrzycka scored 15 points for San Antonio, and Sophia
Young added 10.
Houston was led by Sheryl Swoopes with 15 points. Roneeka Hodges
added 13 points, Dixon had 12 and Michelle Snow scored 10.
Mistie Williams had her second straight double-figure rebound
game for Houston with 11.
Houston led by nine points with 1:30 remaining in the third
quarter after Hodges followed her 3-pointer with an assist to
Williams on a fast break.
But the Silver Stars tied it with 6:20 left when Vickie Johnson
stole Snow's pass and moved the ball down court for an assist on
Kendra Wecker's basket.
A basket by Swoopes gave Houston a 59-55 lead with 4:45
remaining. But San Antonio tied it again when Anderson made her
ninth consecutive free throw with 3:20 to go.
The Silver Stars went ahead 61-59 with 2:29 to go when Shannon
Johnson got a pass inside to Young. It followed an offensive
rebound by Vickie Johnson.
San Antonio built a seven-point lead 8:16 in but missed its next
17 shots. The Silver Stars didn't make another basket until 46
seconds were gone in the third quarter.
But the Comets only could manage a 27-26 lead at halftime after
the Silver Stars made up for some of the poor shooting by making 7
of 8 from the free-throw line in the second quarter. Houston was
0-for-4 from the stripe in the period.
