Mitchell hits 3-pointer at buzzer, Mercury rally past Sun
UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Leilani Mitchell hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Phoenix Mercury an 81-80 victory over Connecticut on Thursday night, extending the Sun's losing streak to six games.
Monique Currie's 3-pointer with 2:47 remaining gave Phoenix its first lead of the second half at 73-72. After five straight points by Connecticut, Brittney Griner made a layup and DeWanna Bonner hit a deep 3-pointer for a 78-77 lead. Jasmine Thomas answered with a jumper with 9.6 seconds left and, after a Phoenix offensive foul, she hit 1 of 2 free throws with 4.8 left for an 80-78 lead.
Bonner led Phoenix (17-11) with 26 points, Mitchell finished with 16, and Griner had 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Thomas scored a career-high 21 points for Connecticut (12-16). Sun scoring leader Alex Bentley missed her third straight game because of an ankle injury and Alyssa Thomas sat out her sixth in a row.
