MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- David Cone will make his season debut on Thursday afternoon when the Boston Red Sox try to become the first team to take a home series from the Minnesota Twins.
He was placed on the 15-day disabled list at the start of the season, but was activated on Monday and immediately inserted into the Red Sox rotation in place of Paxton Crawford. "He has looked pretty good," Boston manager Jimy Williams said. "He has worked really hard to get to this point. I guess we'll have to see what he can do. He'll be on a pitch count, probably somewhere around 80." Cone will make his first start since a September 30 outing at Baltimore as a member of the New York Yanbkees last season, when he went 4-14 with a 6.91 ERA. The 38-year-old righthander is 8-4 with a 3.56 ERA lifetime against the Twins and 4-2 with a 3.68 ERA in his career at the Metrodome. The focus will be on Cone's return, but Brad Radke (6-1, 2.80 ERA) will be going for his league-leading seventh victory. Radke was superb in his first seven starts of the season but got hit hard in his last outing, giving up five runs and nine hits over 4 1/3 innings in a 12-4 loss to Kansas City. The veteran righthander allowed three runs and eight hits over seven innings against Boston at Fenway Park on April 25, but it was the only start in which Radke did not recieve a decision. The Twins were lifted to a 4-3 win in the middle game of the series on Wednesday on pinch hitter Brian Buchanan's lead off homer in the bottom of the eighth. Boston is looking to be the first team to win a series against Minnesota in the Metrodome, where the Twins are 16-5. The Red Sox will also be trying to be the first team to win two series from the Twins this season.
