Rodriguez ready to return for Rangers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
ARLINGTON, Texas (ESPN.com news services) -- Texas catcher Ivan Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list and will play Thursday against the Cleveland Indians.
"They are waiting for me to say I'm OK," Rodriguez said Wednesday night after the Rangers lost 4-3 to Cleveland, their 14th loss in 16 games. "I'm ready." The Rangers also announced the purchase of right-handed pitcher J.D. Smart's contract from Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast League. To make room for Smart and Rodriguez, outfielder Bo Porter was sent to Oklahoma and catcher Mike Hubbard was designated for assignment. Smart was 2-2 with a 2.14 ERA and three saves in 14 relief appearances with Oklahoma. Rodriguez is hitting .309 with six home runs and 11 RBIs in 23 games this season. Rodriguez played in just 91 games last year, the fewest since his rookie season in 1991. He didn't play after breaking his right thumb July 24, two weeks after starting his eighth straight All-Star games, and still won his ninth straight gold glove. The Indians look to continue their dominance on the road Thursday afternoon by completing their first three-game sweep in Arlington in 28 years. The Indians have won 11 consecutive road games, including the first two games against Texas. That puts the Indians in position for their first three-game sweep of the Rangers at home since August 10-12, 1973. Cleveland will go for its 12th straight road win behind starter Chuck Finley (4-2, 3.76 ERA), who has won his last three starts. Finley has allowed two earned runs over 21 innings in his last three starts. Cleveland won all three of those games by a combined 26 runs. The veteran lefthander is 9-17 with a 4.50 ERA in 30 career outings aginst the Rangers and pitched a shutout in his only outing against them last season. Finley will be opposed by Kenny Rogers (1-3, 6.13), who has not won since his season debut. The Rangers have lost the last five games Rogers has started. He allowed five runs and eight hits over seven innings in a 6-5 Texas loss at Chicago in his last outing. Rogers is 7-10 with a 5.61 ERA in 38 career outings against Cleveland, which rallied for there runs in the top of the ninth en route to a 4-3 victory in the middle game of the series on Wednesday. After Wil Cordero tied it with a two-run homer off closer Tim Crabtree, Jolbert Cabrera poked an RBI single up the middle. Marty Cordova singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 20 games for Cleveland, which sent the Rangers spiraling to their third straight loss and ninth in 10 games.
