PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals look for a 10th straight victory Thursday night when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series.
Darryl Kile tossed his ninth career shutout, scattering seven hits while retiring the final 11 batters. J.D. Drew's two-run triple capped a three-run fourth inning for all the runs that Kile needed. Jason Schmidt was the hard-luck loser for Pittsburgh. Schmidt allowed only five hits with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts over five innings in his second appearance of the year. Matt Morris (5-2, 2.29 ERA) will try for his fifth straight victory. Morris has allowed just three earned runs and 22 hits in his last 31 innings. The righthander tossed a four-hit shutout against Pittsburgh on May 7 in a 7-0 victory for St. Louis. He is 2-3 lifetime against Pittsburgh. The Pirates will give the baseball to Todd Ritchie (0-4, 4.34). Ritchie opposed Morris in the loss on May 7 and lost despite allowing a pair of earned runs and six hits in six innings. Ritchie fell to 1-4 against the Cardinals. St. Louis has outscored Pittsburgh, 43-12, in its six victories this season. The Cardinals' longest winning streak since 1970 came from April 10-23, 1982, when they won 12 straight. The Pirates have dropped 14 out of their last 18 games.
