Ortiz (6-1, 2.77 ERA) has emereged as the ace of the Giants staff, allowing two earned runs or less in six of his eight starts.

The righthander has won three straight and has allowed just two runs and 12 hits while striking out 13 over 13 innings in his last two outings.

In his last start, he allowed just one run and seven hits over six innings in a 10-3 victory over New York.

Ortiz is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in three career outings against the Marlins and dominated them in their only meeting last season, when he scattered four hits over eight scoreless innings in his first start at Pro Player Stadium.

Ortiz will be looking to get the Giants back on the winning track after their five-game winning streak was stopped with a 4-3 loss in the middle game of the series on Wednesday.

Matt Clement was outstanding for seven innings while Derrek Lee and Eric Owens homered to help the Marlins even the series.

Clement allowed three runs and four hits while striking out eight in 7 2/3 innings and was unhittable most of the way.

After allowing a leadoff walk in the second inning, he retired 19 straight batters until Benito Santiago singled with one out in the eighth.

Owens, who returned to the lineup after sitting out Tuesday's game because of a sore shoulder, hit his fourth homer in the third inning to give Florida the lead for good.

"My shoulder has definitely been hurting me more than a lot of people know," he said. "I really haven't been able to swing the bat comfortably. It's just something I am going to have to put up with."

Jeff Kent struck out three times for the Giants and Russ Davis four while Rich Aurilia was 1-for-3 and saw his average drop to .397.

San Francisco hopes it can handle Chuck Smith (1-0, 3.46) better than they handled Clement.

Smith was dominant in his first start of the season on May 6 but struggled in his second effort, allowing five runs -- four earned -- and five hits over five innings in a 7-6 loss at San Diego.

Smith made his only appearance against the Giants as a rookie last season and was handed a loss, giving up four runs in seven innings.
