New York began its slide with a 10-5, 11-inning home loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. On Tuesday, Adam Piatt singled just inside the third-base bag to score Frank Menechino in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Athletics a 4-3 victory.

On Wednesday, Menechino, a native of Staten Island, New York, drove Brian Boehringer's 1-0 pitch to deep left field to plate pinch runner Mark Bellhorn with one out in the 10th inning, giving the A's a 4-3 win. The Yankees have played and lost three straight extra-inning games for the first time since April 1964.

Mike Mussina (4-3, 3.67 ERA) tries to win his fourth straight start and halt New York's slide. In his last three starts, Mussina has allowed just five runs and 16 hits over 22 innings. The righthander is 13-6 with a 4.00 ERA in 22 starts against the A's. At Oakland, Mussina is 8-3 with a 3.35 ERA.

The A's lost three games at New York from April 27-29 by a combined four runs and are trying to sweep three games from the Yankees for the first time since August 21-23, 1995.

Oakland's Cory Lidle (0-2, 5.29) faces the last team he beat. Lidle was with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last September 27 when he held the Yankees to one run and five hits in seven innings. The righthander did not get a decision in his last start when he gave up three runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings at Boston on Friday.

New York left fielder Chuck Knoblauch is expected to miss Thursday's game after suffering a bruised left ribcage as he crashed into the wall to catch Piatt's fly ball in the second inning Wednesday.
