SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Rookie Ichiro Suzuki and the Seattle Mariners look to extend their respective streaks Thursday night in the finale of a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox.
"(Suzuki has) got a really good chance to keep it going," Seattle first baseman John Olerud said. "He just has a knack for putting the ball in play. As fast as he is getting down the line, even when he doesnt hit the ball well, hes got a chance to get a hit. He's just always a threat up there." The Japanese right fielder is a key part of the early success for Seattle, which holds the best record in the majors and has a seven-game winning streak. Suzuki collected two hits in the middle game of the series on Wednesday, but it was his double with two out in the second inning that gave the Mariners the lead for good en route to a 7-2 victory. Carlos Guillen, who had been 1-for-14 against the White Sox this season, was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Starter Paul Abbott allowed two runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings and struck out 10 to provide the Mariners with their first double-digit strikeout performance of the season. The entire Chicago lineup struggled, but none more than Paul Konerko, who struck out four times and stranded five runners on base. He has just one hit in his last 22 at-bats. The White Sox have scored just five runs combined in the first two games of the series and will have the dubious task of facing Seattle's undefeated Freddy Garcia (3-0, 4.59 ERA) in the series finale. After winning three straight starts, Garcia has not recorded a decision in his last three outings. He is coming off his shortest outing since his season debut. At Toronto in his last start he allowed six runs and six hits over just 4 2/3 innings in an 11-7 loss. The Venezuelan righthander had his best outing of the season at Chicago on April 29. He gave up just one run and four hits over 8 1/3 innings in his longest outing of the season, although he did not recieve a decision as Seattle lost in 14 innings. David Wells (3-3, 3.63) will try to help the White Sox avoid their first three-game sweep at Seattle since August 9-11, 1999. In his last outing, Wells allowed five runs and 10 hits in his third complete game of the season in a 6-5 Chicago victory over Texas. The veteran lefthander is 9-9 with a 4.29 ERA in 38 career appearances against Seattle.
