Sosa hit his 400th career home run, off Shane Reynolds, on Wednesday, but the Cubs dropped a 6-2 decision to Houston for theiseason-high sixth straight loss.

The Cubs are in the midst of their longest skid since dropping eight straight from September 13-20, when they were outscored, 45-16. During the current slide the Cubs have surrendered 31 runs and produced only 16.

Sosa became just the second player to hit his 400th home runs in a Cubs' uniform. He joins Ernie Banks, who was in attendance Wednesday as part of a baseball card promotion.

Chicago puts Jason Bere (3-2, 5.54) on the hill for his eighth start Thursday night. He started May 11 and suffered the loss in a 7-2 defeat to St. Louis. He allowed seven runs -- five earned -- and seven hits with three walks in 4 2/3 innings -- his second lowest outing of the year. Bere is winless since April 18 and hopes to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

Houston has won four in a row to match a season-high.

Scott Elarton (4-3, 6.22) makes his ninth start of the season for Houston. He has not pitched more than six innings in his last three starts and is coming off a no-decision in his last outing last Saturday. He is 4-0-1 lifetime in 11 appearances against the Cubs and went 2-0 last season in three games.

Craig Biggio collected his 3,000th total base with an RBI single in the eighth. He joins fellow Astro Jeff Bagwell as the only two in franchise history to achieve that milestone.

Houston is 13-7 away from Enron Field. The Cubs are 10-7 at Wrigley.
