BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles can record their first sweep this season when they battle the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night in the finale of their three-game series.
The Orioles send rookie Willis Roberts (4-2. 4.54 ERA) to the mound for his sixth straight start after six bullpen appearances. The righthander has lost his last two starts after winning his first four. Last Friday he lasted only three innings and was tagged for nine runs by the New York Yankees in suffering a 14-5 loss. Detroit will counter with knuckleballer Steve Sparks (1-2, 3.77). Sparks made seven consecutive starts before pitching 1/3 inning of relief against Anaheim on May 13 in a 14-2 loss. Sparks is winless since his second start on April 14 when he blanked Cleveland, 1-0, on a complete game. In his last outing last Friday, he had a no-decision after allowing five runs and nine hits in only 4 2-3 innings in a 7-6 victory over Anaheim. The Tigers have dropped the first two games of a 10-game road trip and lost three in a row overall.
