Joe Randa capped a five-run ninth inning with his first career grand slam to give the Royals a 9-5 victory on Wednesday. Randa, who had missed Kansas City's previous two games with tightness in his lower back, also had a run-scoring single in the sixth when the Royals rallied from a 5-0 deficit.

Former Devil Rays closer Roberto Hernandez allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning for his first win since September 26.

Kansas City first baseman Mike Sweeney is hitting .361 (13-for-36) in his last eight games and leads the major leagues with 22 doubles.

The Royals won three straight games from April 28-30, but have not swept a three-game series since last September 26-28 when they beat Detroit. Kansas City has split 36 all-time meetings with Tampa Bay.

Chad Durbin (1-2, 6.05 ERA) comes off his first win for the Royals. The righthander went eight innings at Minnesota on Saturday and held the Twins to three runs and nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts in a 12-4 victory. He was 2-2 with a 3.33 ERA in five starts with Class AAA Omaha before being recalled on May 1.

Durbin went 0-1 in two starts against the Devil Rays last year, allowing six earned runs and 13 hits over 11 1/3 innings.

Brian Rose (0-1, 6.94) makes his second start for the Devil Rays. Rose made three relief appearances before giving up seven rns and eight hits over five innings in Saturday's 8-0 defeat at Cleveland. The righthander lost his only start against Tampa Bay when he yielded three runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings on July 8, 1999.
