ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays claimed left-hander Kurt Birkins off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles and designated catcher Raul Casanova for assignment on Monday.

Birkins split last season between the Orioles and Triple-A Norfolk, starting two of 19 games he appeared in for Baltimore. The 27-year-old was 1-2 with an 8.13 ERA and made his first major league start at Tropicana Field on Sept. 3.

Casanova, 35, hit .253 with six homers and 11 RBIs in 29 games last season.
