YURI KADOBNOV/AFP/Getty ImagesGold medalist Evan Lysacek soon will be honored in his hometown of Naperville, Ill.If you drive 30 miles west of Chicago you'll run into a city of about 150,000 people.
You already know a handful of them.
Naperville, Ill., is the home of champions.
This past week, that list of notables grew as Evan Lysacek won the gold medal in figure skating at the Vancouver Olympics.
In being the first American man to bring home the figure skating gold since 1988, Lysacek joins Sean Payton and Candace Parker in the pantheon of Naperville natives to achieve the highest honors in their sport.
Payton, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, just won the Super Bowl, and Parker was the 2008 WNBA MVP and rookie of the year.
One man who's been keeping track of the city's famous sons and daughters is A. George Pradel. He's the longest-serving mayor in Naperville history and has been in office since 1995.
"Candace had her day and we named a basketball court after her. We had a parade for Sean Payton before the Super Bowl and can't wait to see him again," Pradel said. "And Evan Lysacek is our man of the day! We're so excited and inspired by his performance."
Don't count Naperville out for more Olympic medals. The city has an eye on another one of its athletes, Molly Schaus, a goalie for the U.S. women's hockey team. She moved to Naperville when she was 7 years old.
