Fuentes, Teixeira still on the market

The Braves may have a hard time finding a team in need of Mark Teixeira.

DEADLINE DEALINGS

There are plenty of teams in the running that have holes to fill. The Dodgers need bullpen help and the Rockies are still listening to offers on Brian Fuentes, but I find it hard to believe they would do business together unless the Rockies get Matt Kemp or someone comparable back in the deal. That may be the only way to justify it. Otherwise, they have to find an outlet outside of their division.

The Mets need a corner outfielder. You can't expect Ryan Church (headaches from concussion) to come back and stay active. You can't expect him to come back and pick up where he left off, either, because he's just missed a couple of months. Adam Dunn, Randy Winn and Jason Bay are some possible targets for the Mets. I also believe the Mets need to do something with their bullpen.

The Red Sox need bullpen help, so they'd be in on Fuentes talks. People have kind of backed off Huston Street a bit with concerns about his health. He has dropped his arm slot some recently, and that has people worried that things aren't quite right.

I was shocked about Houston getting Randy Wolf. In the past, the Astros have made up huge deficits, so maybe they believe they can make another comeback. But I just don't see them having the pitching to do it. You have to be really consistent. It's one thing to have Roy Oswalt, Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens in your rotation. It's another thing when you're trying to piece your rotation together. So I was surprised the Astros were a buyer, when I would have thought they would be a seller, or at least a team that would play it out with what it has.

The Rays will be in on the bullpen guys and any right-handed-hitting outfielders, but I think there's a real reluctance on their part to go get a star player. What's made them special is that there aren't really any superstars on their team. I think some of their guys will go on to be very recognizable names, but bringing in a Ken Griffey Jr. type would upset the balance. I love Griffey, but he would change the whole dynamic of the team and I don't think he dramatically improves their team. There has also been some talk about Bay. Winn has already played there, so I don't know the Rays would go down that road again.

It could be a challenge for the Braves to trade Mark Teixeira. How many playoff contenders really need a first baseman? The Mets are not going to trade for Teixeira, not with how Carlos Delgado has been swinging the bat. The Phillies have Ryan Howard. The Cubs have Derrek Lee. The Brewers have Prince Fielder. The Cardinals have Albert Pujols. If the Braves decide they want to trade Teixeira, how many outlets are there? The Dodgers have James Loney, and they're not going to trade him. Teixeira is a Gold Glove first baseman, so you don't want him as a DH. So that means forget the Red Sox, even if David Ortiz has a setback. The Angels look like they'll stand pat and the A's don't look like they are going to do much since they've stumbled a bit. I would expect Teixeira to stay in Atlanta for the remainder of the season.

FORWARD THINKING: MONDAY

He has given up just three runs in those five starts, a span of 29 2/3 innings. Jered Weaver (8-8, 4.08 ERA) left his most recent outing after three innings because of shoulder soreness.

Ted Lilly • Cubs at Brewers, 8:05 p.m. ET: CC Sabathia (4-0, 1.36 ERA) has won all four of his starts since joining the Brewers. His past three have been complete games. Ted Lilly (10-6, 4.49 ERA) wasn't around long last time he faced the Brewers, giving up four runs in just 4 2/3 innings.

Mark Buehrle • White Sox at Twins, 8:10 p.m. ET: Mark Buehrle (8-8, 3.56 ERA) is 21-11 with a 3.78 ERA in his career against the Twins. The 21 wins are the most against any team. After a strong run in which he went 4-0 over six starts, Kevin Slowey (6-7, 4.41 ERA) has lost his past two outings.

UNIQUE COMBINATION

The Mets paid Johan Santana a lot of money for performances like the one they got on Sunday, when he tossed a complete game in a 9-1 win against St. Louis. Fernando Tatis isn't getting paid all that much, by comparison, but he has still provided some priceless performances.

Tatis, past 14 starts

W-L 11-3

SUNDAY'S NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES

GOOD
Ubaldo Jimenez• Ubaldo Jimenez pitched six scoreless innings and has not allowed more than three runs in a start since June 27, going 5-1 in that stretch.
BAD
Jo-Jo Reyes• Jo-Jo Reyes and Royce Ring were the biggest bullpen culprits as the Braves coughed up a 5-0 lead in a 12-10 loss against the Phillies.
UGLY
Jeff Suppan• Jeff Suppan could not keep the Brewers in a tie for first in the NL Central, giving up 11 hits and eight runs in a loss against the Astros.
