Red Sox have more problems than just Manny being Manny

Could Manny Ramirez have taken off his Red Sox hat for good?
MORE THAN MANNY
By MARK SIMON, ESPN RESEARCH
Will getting rid of Manny Ramirez fix what ails the Red Sox? Right now, they're not hitting and they're not pitching, so maybe some fresh blood will do the trick. The Angels swept the Red Sox at Fenway Park for the first time since 2001, and it wasn't pretty. The Red Sox are 1-8 since the All-Star break against playoff-possible teams (the Angels and Yankees). Luckily for them, the schedule softens a bit with the A's and Royals coming up. If the Red Sox can't figure out their funk by the end of those series, they might find themselves in trouble as far as the playoffs are concerned.| Some Red Sox struggling since All-Star break | ||

FORWARD THINKING: THURSDAY
• Cubs at Brewers, 2:05 p.m. ET: Rich Harden (0-1, 1.04 ERA) has permitted just two earned runs in three starts with the Cubs. What he doesn't have is a win -- he's 0-1 with a pair of no-decisions. Dave Bush (5-8, 4.51 ERA) is 4-2 with a 2.85 ERA at Miller Park. He's 1-6 with a 6.95 ERA away from Milwaukee.
• Angels at Yankees, 7:05 p.m. ET: Opponents are hitting .306 against Jon Garland (9-6, 4.30 ERA) in the first three innings of games. Left-handers continue to struggle against Andy Pettitte (12-7, 3.76 ERA), hitting just .185 against him this season.
• White Sox at Twins, 8:10 p.m. ET: John Danks (8-4, 3.18 ERA) is 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA on the road this season. Scott Baker (7-3, 3.38 ERA), meanwhile, has been equally tough at home, going 3-1 with a 2.38 ERA.

PUDGE TO GIVE YANKEES A NUDGE
By Chris Singleton, ESPN
I think Wednesday's trade for Ivan Rodriguez gives the Yankees some peace of mind. With Jorge Posada going down, the Yankees were one injury away from having no one to handle their pitching staff. No offense to Chad Moeller, but you really need a good catcher to handle the guys they have in that rotation. Jose Molina has handled the pitching staff very well -- in fact, that's been his strongest attribute -- but Pudge will bring more offense than Molina and still will be more than capable of handling the staff. If Molina were to get injured, without Posada, that would have been the straw that broke the camel's back for New York. Now, I don't know exactly how much Pudge will play. Either way, though, now you've got two good catchers. Molina's going to handle the pitchers better, but Pudge is certainly strong defensively and definitely will give you something more at the plate. Their recent acquisition of Damaso Marte will offset the loss of Kyle Farnsworth. I see Marte as one of the best lefty relievers in the game right now. He can slide into Farnsworth's role nicely. Farnsworth has become part of that family, and I think Joe Girardi is sad to see him go. Farnsworth has had his struggles, and even though he's been better lately, the Yankees probably thought it was 50/50 that he'd be a guy to count on the rest of the way. Now, this move doesn't put the Yankees over the top, it just allows them to sustain what they are doing right now --- playing good baseball. I think they are still on the outside looking in at the playoffs. Their schedule the remainder of the season is difficult. They have 10 games with the Angels, and a couple of very long road trips. In fact, on Monday they begin a stretch in which they play 16 of 19 games on the road. Also, I don't think this an indication that the Tigers have totally packed it in this year. I think manager Jim Leyland was honest with Pudge and told him Brandon Inge was going to be assuming at least half of the catching responsibilities going forward. So, I'm sure Pudge hasn't been the happiest guy around the Tigers clubhouse. When a veteran player who can still play has his playing time cut like that, he can't be happy. Now, he's going to New York and putting on those pinstripes. I think it's going to be an honor for him. The prospect of him platooning in New York could be more attractive to him. He has won before with the Marlins and Tigers, but to be near the end of his career and go into Yankee Stadium as a home player, I think that excitement will help to make up for some of the problems normally involved with having to move in the middle of the season. He's also very familiar with the American League, and that should help, too. I think Farnsworth will help the Tigers bullpen. He could close, but I think Todd Jones could end up back in that role eventually. Right now, Fernando Rodney is being given a chance, and they might look to him as a guy who could hold that job for the next five years, but Jones should still get another shot this season.WEDNESDAY'S NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES
| GOOD |
• Kelly Shoppach couldn't lead the Indians to a win against the Tigers, but he did go 5-for-6, and all five hits went for extra bases. That's two homers and three doubles in the 14-12 loss. |
BAD |
• Brian Burres gave up four hits and four runs in just 1 1/3 innings as the Yankees blew out the Orioles 13-3 at Yankee Stadium. |
UGLY |
| • The Red Sox's defense took the night off against the Angels. Boston committed four errors, with three coming during the Angels' six-run sixth inning to finish off a sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park. |

NEWS AND NOTES
• The A's are making roster space for Frank Thomas, who has been out since May 29 with quadriceps tendinitis. Oakland optioned infielder Wes Banston and outfielder Eric Patterson to Triple-A Sacramento. Thomas hit in a simulated game Wednesday and afterward declared himself ready to play. He is expected to be activated Friday.
• David Wright went 0-for-4 and did not score in the Mets' 7-5 loss against the Marlins. It was the first time in 13 games Wright did not score a run. The streak was a team record.
