FORWARD THINKING: TUESDAY
• Rangers at Red Sox, 7:05 p.m. ET: Knuckleballer Charlie Zink (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his debut, replacing injured knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. The Rangers' Scott Feldman (4-5, 4.82 ERA) is 0-2 with a no-decision since he was recalled from the minor leagues on July 22.
• Cardinals at Marlins, 7:10 p.m. ET: Opponents are having quite a bit more success against Kyle Lohse (13-4, 3.80 ERA) when he pitches away from Busch Stadium. When Lohse pitches on the road, he yields a .335 batting average against, compared with .227 at home. The Marlins' Chris Volstad (3-2, 2.67 ERA) is the opposite; he's 0-2 at home but 3-0 on the road.
• Phillies at Dodgers, 10:10 p.m. ET: Cole Hamels (9-8, 3.35 ERA) has not won since July 3, as he's gone 0-3 with three no-decisions. Clayton Kershaw (2-3, 3.71 ERA), who needed more than two months to pick up his first win, is 2-0 in his past three starts.

BBTN MINUTE: LONGORIA PLACED ON DL
HAMELS BETTER THAN HIS NUMBERS
By Orel Hershiser, ESPN
For the most part, Cole Hamels' season has been a story of bad rhythm between starts and uneven run support. You might look at a No. 1 pitcher who's just a game better than .500 (9-8) and think he's not having a good season, but if you take a closer look at the numbers, you'll see Hamels is doing everything a team could ask its No. 1 starter to do.
STAT OF THE DAY
According to Inside Edge's scouting data, the Marlins lead the league in slugging percentage on balls hit to the left side of the field at .671, compared to .460 up the middle and .541 to the right side. It's no wonder, because Florida's lineup is stocked with dead-pull right-handed hitters:
| Percentage of in-play balls hit to each side (through Monday) | |||
| Hitter | Left | Middle | Right |
| Josh Willingham | 57.6 | 18.0 | 24.4 |
| Jorge Cantu | 57.5 | 20.2 | 22.3 |
| Dan Uggla | 54.3 | 20.6 | 25.1 |
| Cody Ross | 52.6 | 23.1 | 24.3 |
| Matt Treanor | 51.4 | 21.5 | 27.1 |
| MLB average (RHB) | 45.9 | 23.3 | 30.9 |
MONDAY'S NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES
| GOOD |
• The Twins' Glen Perkins gave up five runs in six innings last month in a loss against the Yankees. He had no trouble with them this time, tossing eight shutout innings while allowing just four hits in a 4-0 win. |
BAD |
• The White Sox's John Danks took a no-hitter into the seventh inning; the Giants' Jonathan Sanchez took one into the sixth. Both ended the night as losing pitchers in losses against the Red Sox and Astros. |
UGLY |
• The O's Rocky Cherry retired just one batter in the seventh inning against the Indians. He gave up two hits and three runs and walked away with the loss in a 13-8 defeat. It was Cherry's second appearance of the season. |
