Mets benefiting from Delgado's resurgence

Carlos Delgado, right, leads the National League in HRs (14) and RBIs (44) in the second half.

A REMARKABLE REVERSAL

The Carlos Delgado story is another reason I love baseball so much. Earlier in the year, a scout told me Delgado couldn't hit anything above his belt with any sort of velocity on it. And it appeared he was done as a big-time power hitter in the major leagues. But since June 27, he's had the most RBIs (61) in the National League. He has gone from a player who was in big trouble as far as his career goes to being at least on the periphery of the MVP voting. This can happen only in baseball.

I've said this a million times: You get really good and really bad awfully fast in baseball -- way faster than in any other sport. So many times, I ask players, "Why are you so good?" or "What happened to you?" And sometimes they don't even have a good reason.

All I know is the same scout who told me Delgado couldn't catch up to anything hard above his belt told me, "Now he can catch up to everything above his belt." How did that happen in a two-month period? That's another one of the great mysteries, the great beauties of baseball.

If I had to guess, I think he's just become a little more selective at the plate. I think he was swinging at some bad pitches. Anyone who's seen him over the years -- and I've seen a lot of him -- his power to left and left-center field, especially, is tremendous, and a bunch of his recent hits, including some home runs, have gone to left-center field.

So it appears that just a little more discipline in the strike zone and hitting the ball the opposite way a little more are the best explanations for the turnaround. All I know is that this was not supposed to happen, but it has, and the Mets are three games ahead in the division in great part because Delgado has gotten hot at the right time.

Another possible reason, although I think it's rather unlikely, is the Mets' managerial change. Personally, I'm not going to give Jerry Manuel that much credit or run Willie Randolph down because that just doesn't make sense to me in this particular case. But I have seen it before where a change in attitude in the clubhouse, which clearly has happened since the firing, can make a difference.

The Mets players no longer are walking around every day wondering whether the manager is going to get fired. They're playing in a much more relaxed way. Maybe that's helped Delgado, but I think it's more that he's fixed a few mechanical flaws. Ultimately, baseball just has a funny way of making you ask: How did that happen? And this is another example.

WEEKEND PREVIEW

With less than a month remaining, the first weekend of September has huge implications as far as the NL East and NL West races are concerned. The Mets and Diamondbacks are looking to protect slim leads on the Phillies and Dodgers, respectively, as the top two teams in each division meet for the final time this season.

Best Series

Ramirez

Diamondbacks at Dodgers
The Dodgers, on the verge of being knocked out of the NL West race a week ago, can recapture first place with a strong weekend at home. Manny Ramirez has feasted on the Diamondbacks since his Dodgers stint began, though you'd figure Arizona could give him the Barry Bonds treatment and walk him frequently this weekend.

Best Pitching Matchup

Hamels

Sunday: Phillies (Cole Hamels) at Mets (Johan Santana), 8 p.m. ET
Remember when the Mets lost six straight games started by Santana? Seems like a distant memory, considering that they've won his past six starts. He has looked like the great pitcher the Mets expected him to be, with three wins and a 2.14 ERA in that stretch. Hamels has been even better: 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his past four starts. He hasn't pitched against the Mets since April 18, when he was roughed up for five runs.

Johan Santana: 2008 season
  April-June July-September
W-L 7-7 5-0
ERA 3.01 2.30

Best of the Rest

Angels at White Sox
White SoxAngelsA potential playoff preview here, with larger implications for the White Sox, who, like the Twins, are happy to be home. The White Sox have been a significantly better team at home all season. They'll get 10 straight at home before a road trip that will feature the Yankees and Twins, so it's imperative that they maintain their slim divisional edge.

White Sox: 2008 season

OLNEY: SUNDAY NIGHT PREVIEW

FORWARD THINKING: FRIDAY

Brett Myers • Phillies at Mets, 7:10 p.m. ET: The two NL East front-runners go head-to-head for the final time this season as they open a three-game series at Shea Stadium. And each team will be sending one of its hottest pitchers to the mound, Mike Pelfrey for the Mets and Brett Myers for the Phillies. Pelfrey (13-8, 3.66 ERA) has won his past three decisions and is 6-2 with a 3.26 ERA over his past 10 starts. Myers (8-10, 4.40 ERA) has been brilliant since returning from a minor league demotion, going 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA.

Mark Buehrle • Angels at White Sox, 8:11 p.m. ET: The White Sox would love to be in the Angels' situation. Entering their series at U.S. Cellular Field, the Angels' magic number is at 6 for clinching the AL West title. Meanwhile, the White Sox have lost five of seven and are struggling to hold on to a 1½-game lead over the Twins in the AL Central. Chicago starter Mark Buehrle (11-11, 4.12 ERA) got knocked around in his only start against the Angels, on May 12, giving up six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Dustin Moseley (1-3, 7.15 ERA) makes his first start for the Angels since July 13 in place of injured Jered Weaver.

Derek Lowe • Diamondbacks at Dodgers, 10:05 p.m. ET, ESPN: Only 1½ games separate the NL West leaders as they meet for the final time this season at Dodger Stadium. The second-place Dodgers have won five straight and took two of three in Arizona this past weekend; the first-place D-backs have lost seven of their past 10. Derek Lowe (11-11, 3.69 ERA), who beat Arizona with six shutout innings Sunday, starts for L.A. against Dan Haren (14-7, 3.24 ERA), who lost to the Dodgers on Saturday, giving up five runs and 10 hits in six innings.

THURSDAY'S NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES

GOOD
Scott Kazmir• Scott Kazmir pitched like an ace when the Rays needed it most. The left-hander shut out the Yankees on one hit over six innings, striking out seven and walking five. And Tampa Bay needed every bit of Kazmir's effort; the Rays' bullpen allowed five Yankees runs before avoiding a sweep with a 7-5 victory. The win upped Tampa's lead in the AL East to 3½ games over Boston.
BAD
Kenny RogersThe season is going from bad to worse for Kenny Rogers. The Tigers left-hander lasted only two-plus innings, his shortest outing of the season, giving up eight hits and six runs in a 7-1 loss to the Angels. The 43-year-old has lost three straight decisions and seven of his past eight, registering an 8.50 ERA.
UGLY
TwinsThe Twins' 14-game road trip came to an inglorious end in a 9-0 loss to the Blue Jays and Jesse Litsch, who tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout. Minnesota limps home after going 5-9 on the trip and getting swept in Toronto.

STAT OF THE DAY

Inside EdgeThe classic "productive out" situation is runner on second base and no outs. According to Inside Edge's scouting data, here are the hitters most likely to hit a ground ball to the right side of the field in that situation this year:

Runner on 2B, no outs (min. 8 AB)
Hitter AB GB to right side Pct. of AB
Casey Kotchman 14 8 57
Craig Counsell 8 4 50
David Murphy 12 6 50
Raul Ibanez 9 4 44

THIS DATE IN MLB HISTORY (SEPT. 5)

• 1914: En route to tossing a 9-0 shutout against the Toronto Maple Leafs, 19-year-old Babe Ruth of the AAA Providence Grays hits the first home run in his professional career. The site of the "Sultan of Swat's" only minor league homer, Hanlan's Point Stadium, which was located on Lake Ontario's Toronto Islands near the city's mainland, is being promoted as a historical landmark by Jerry Amernic, author of "Gift of the Bambino."

• 1921: The Senators' Walter Johnson breaks Cy Young's strikeout record as he fans seven Yankees for a career total of 2,287.

• 1995: When the game becomes official in the bottom of the fifth inning, Cal Ripken receives a standing ovation for more than five minutes from the sellout crowd at Oriole Park at Camden Yards as he ties Yankee legend Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games played.

• 1998: Mark McGwire becomes the third -- and quickest -- player in major league history to hit 60 home runs in a season. "Big Mac" accomplishes the feat in 141 games as compared with Babe Ruth (154) and Roger Maris (159).
