ROUGH MONTH FOR RAYS
By Mark Simon, ESPN Research
There are several pennant contenders currently reeling -- the Cubs, the Brewers, the D-backs -- but none is having as much trouble as the Rays, who have lost six out of seven after a 3-0 loss to the Red Sox on Monday at Fenway Park. The loss cut the Rays' lead to a half-game over the Red Sox in the American League East. Tampa Bay has struggled to score the past two days, getting shut out in consecutive games for the first time since 2004, a reminder of bad times for a franchise thought to be past them. The Rays seem to be missing the lineup presence brought by Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria. Their lack of offensive punch, particularly against left-handed pitchers like Jon Lester who shut down the Rays on Monday, is apparent.| Rays in September | |

METS FACE CHALLENGES WITHOUT WAGNER
By Buck Showalter, ESPN
The loss of Billy Wagner is obviously going to be an issue for the Mets. I think all these young pitchers -- who are pitching in situations they haven't been in before -- were always thinking in the back of their minds that the cavalry was coming. There hadn't been as much pressure on them, therefore, as there is going to be now that they know for sure that Wagner is not coming back. They'll be forced to confront that fact, finally. In some ways, though, that could be a positive, now that they know what they'll have to deal with the rest of the way.

MONDAY'S NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES
| GOOD |
• Gary Sheffield went deep twice as the Tigers unloaded on Oakland pitchers for 14 runs in a 14-8 win. Sheffield went 2-for-5, but both hits were homers, with one a grand slam. |
BAD |
• Brendan Donnelly recorded one out against the Orioles, but that doesn't mean his outing was brief. Indeed, Donnelly had enough time to give up three hits, two walks and five runs in the Indians' 14-3 loss. |
UGLY |
• Rocco Baldelli came to the plate four times against the Red Sox. Each at-bat ended the same way, with Baldelli headed back toward the dugout after a strikeout. Before Monday's four-strikeout performance, Baldelli had struck out four times over his previous eight games combined. |
FORWARD THINKING: TUESDAY
• Rays at Red Sox, 7:05 p.m. ET: The hard-charging Red Sox send Daisuke Matsuzaka to the mound. Matsuzaka (16-2, 2.88 ERA) has lost just once since June 21, and he beat the Rays the only time he faced them this year, working through a five-inning, five-walk performance on July 2. Scott Kazmir (11-6, 2.99 ERA), meanwhile, has not fared well in his two meetings with the Red Sox, going 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA this season.
• Cubs at Cardinals, 8:15 p.m. ET: Ryan Dempster (15-6, 2.99 ERA) tries to right the Cubs, who have struggled lately. Dempster lost his most recent start against Houston. He has not, however, lost consecutive decisions all season. Kyle Lohse (13-6, 3.76 ERA) has walked away with a no-decision in each of his past three starts. In the two most recent outings, he tossed six shutout innings against the D-backs and allowed two runs over eight innings against Houston the time before that.
• Diamondbacks at Giants, 10:15 p.m. ET: Doug Davis (6-8, 4.58 ERA) was roughed up the only time he faced the Giants this season. He gave up nine hits and six runs in five innings of an 11-3 loss on May 28. Barry Zito (9-16, 5.45 ERA) is 3-1 over his past four starts. Zito, though, is 0-3 with a 7.40 ERA in four starts against the D-backs this season.
STAT OF THE DAY
According to Inside Edge's scouting data, it is much more difficult for hitters to make contact on fastballs that are 92 mph or harder. Only 39 percent of swings on 92-plus-mph fastballs are put in play, compared to 46 percent for fastballs registering 91 mph or less. The following five hitters are the best at putting hard heaters in play (min. 100 pitches):
| Swings on 92-plus mph fastballs | |||
| Hitter | Club | In-play pct. | Miss pct. |
| Jeff Keppinger | Reds | 65.2 | 1.8 |
| Juan Rivera | Angels | 60.0 | 8.6 |
| Luis Rodriguez | Padres | 58.8 | 10.3 |
| Cristian Guzman | Nationals | 58.8 | 8.8 |
| Damion Easley | Mets | 58.6 | 4.3 |
