Angels and Dodgers: A possible World Series preview?

-
Kim Klement-US Presswire
A big key for the Angels will be getting Ervin Santana healthy and pitching well again.
By Tim Kurkjian, ESPN The Magazine
This Dodgers heading over to play the Angels is definitely the best interleague series of the weekend. It's the best team in the NL against the hottest team in the AL. It is still very early, but the case can easily be made that this could end up being a World Series preview if the Angels continue to hit the way they've hit.| Featured Series: Dodgers at Angels |

ON DECK: WEEKEND WATCH
Rays at Mets
The Mets have kept pace in the NL East most of the year, and the Rays have tightened the gap in the AL East a bit with a good June. Tampa Bay opened the month with a four-game winning streak. After a brief three-game skid, the Rays rattled off a six-game winning streak to move back over .500.
Yankees at Marlins

A rematch of the 2003 World Series, which marked the last time the Yankees reached the Fall Classic. Florida, behind the arm of Josh Beckett, won that series 4-2. Beckett won't be around this time. Instead, the Marlins will send Sean West, Josh Johnson and Chris Volstad to the mound. For the Marlins, it will be a second consecutive matchup against the AL East's upper crust, having faced the Red Sox earlier in the week.
Rangers at Giants

The Giants have had an uneven run so far in interleague games against the AL West. They swept Oakland, holding the A's to three runs over three games. Then the Angels came visiting, and the Giants lost all three as the pitchers served up 21 runs over those three games. The Rangers still rely heavily on power; they are second in the majors behind the Yankees in home runs.

THURSDAY'S BEST AND WORST
| BEST |
• The Nationals needed five pitchers against the Yankees on Thursday. Need that many pitchers, usually it's bad news. Not this time. The collection, beginning with starter Craig Stammen and ending with Mike MacDougal (right), shut out the Yanks in the first game without a homer in new Yankee Stadium. New York got seven hits, with only one coming off the bullpen. |
WORST |
• The White Sox were leading 5-1 against the Cubs with two outs in the eighth, but the White Sox bullpen could not hold on. Scott Linebrink gave up four runs in the eighth as the Cubs tied it, and Matt Thornton gave up the final run in the ninth as the Cubs pulled out a 6-5 win. |
NUMBERS TO KNOW
Randy Johnson has had an up-and-down 2009 in San Francisco. He lost his first two starts and saw his ERA balloon to 11.42. Then, on June 4, Johnson won his 300th career game when the Giants beat the Nationals 5-1 in Washington.
