ON DECK: THURSDAY'S BEST MATCHUPS
Phillies at Braves, 7 p.m. ET
The trip to Atlanta hasn't gone all that well for the Phillies. They lost the series opener Tuesday in 10 innings. On Wednesday, they couldn't figure out Braves right-hander Jair Jurrjens, who flirted with a no-hitter and ended up giving up only one hit over seven innings in Atlanta's win. J.A. Happ tries to help the Phillies escape the sweep.
Giants at Cardinals, 7:15 p.m. ET

Barry Zito hasn't been going deep into games -- he has gone more than 5 2/3 innings only once in his past five starts -- but he has been mostly effective, going 3-1 with a no-decision over that stretch.
Orioles at Angels, 10:05 p.m. ET

Although he did not win his last time out, John Lackey did have his best outing since coming off the disabled list. He allowed five hits and one run over seven innings and struck out nine in a no-decision of a 2-1 win against the Diamondbacks.

WEDNESDAY'S BEST AND WORST
| BEST |
• Adam Wainwright might not have gotten the win in the Cardinals' 10-inning victory against the Giants, but that cannot diminish his performance. Wainwright allowed one run over nine innings, striking out 12 in a 122-pitch effort. |
WORST |
• While Jair Jurrjens was flirting with a no-hitter against the Phillies, his opponent, Cole Hamels, was getting hit
hard. Hamels allowed nine hits and seven runs in only four innings of work in Philadelphia's 11-1 loss. It was Hamels' third straight loss. |

NUMBERS TO KNOW
Atlanta Braves right-hander Javier Vazquez is 5-7 this season, but the won-loss record doesn't indicate how well he actually has pitched this year. He has 125 strikeouts (second in the NL entering Wednesday,) and his 23 walks are tied for sixth-fewest among pitchers with at least 80 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .227 against Vazquez this season, lower than the .258 NL average. He's averaging 6.2 innings pitched per start.
Vazquez's success comes from his work with his off-speed pitches. His off-speed pitches rate well above the league average in terms of opponent batting average, slugging percentage, swing-and-miss percentage and chase percentage.
Vazquez and the Braves complete a series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, and the Phillies are hitting .221 and slugging .373 against non-fastballs this year, both around the league average.
