The Twins will have to chase down the Tigers without the services of injured Justin Morneau.

The closest divisional race remaining is happening in the AL Central, where the Twins and even the White Sox remain in striking distance of the struggling Detroit Tigers. This weekend, the Twins, four games back of Detroit, host the Tigers for three games at the Metrodome.

ON DECK: WEEKEND WATCH
Giants at Dodgers
The Giants are too far back to catch the Dodgers in the NL West; L.A. will open this series with an 8½-game lead over San Francisco. The Dodgers are five in front of Colorado. But the Giants still have the Rockies in their sights in the wild-card race, trailing Colorado by 3½. Jonathan Sanchez gets the series started for the Giants, which might not be the best news for San Francisco. He is 0-3 with a 6.05 ERA against L.A. this season.
Rockies at Diamondbacks

The Rockies, leading the NL wild card, have been streaky the past month. They closed August on a five-game losing streak, which, of course, came after they had won eight of nine. Colorado then opened September by winning 10 of 11, which included an eight-game winning streak. That eight-game run was followed by four losses in a row. So it's hard to figure what to expect from the Rockies this weekend in Arizona. Things haven't gone well for the Diamondbacks, who are 4-11 this month.
Angels at Rangers

Last chance for the Rangers. They stand 6½ back of L.A. in the AL West heading into the series. They trail Boston by six in the wild card. Tommy Hunter opens the series for the Rangers, and he is 5-1 since Aug. 1. Scott Feldman follows him. Feldman finally lost in his most recent start, snapping a run in which he was 7-0 in eight starts. Feldman is also 2-0 in three starts this season against the Angels. Derek Holland, who closes the series on Sunday, hasn't had quite the same success as Hunter and Feldman lately. No, he is 0-4 in his past four starts and has given up at least five runs in each outing.

THURSDAY'S BEST AND WORST
| BEST |
• Cole Hamels took a perfect game into the fifth inning against the Nationals. By the time he handed the ball over to Brad Lidge in the ninth, Hamels had allowed five hits and one run, compiled 10 strikeouts and picked up his 10th win of the year in the Phillies' 4-2 victory.
|
WORST |
• The White Sox led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth against the Mariners. Closer Bobby Jenks couldn't close it out. Instead, he served up a pair of solo homers, including the game-tying shot by Bill Hall with two outs. The Mariners eventually won the game 4-3 in 14 innings. |

NUMBERS TO KNOW
Brian Duensing will take the hill Friday against Detroit in hopes of bringing Minnesota within three games of the division lead. Duensing has made only six starts this season, but he has pitched well in three starts this month.
He has a 1.42 ERA in September after posting an ERA of 4.37 through August. A lot of Duensing's success in September can be attributed to his nasty slider, which has been untouchable, even more so than to start the season.
